The Humidifier: Adding Moisture

A humidifier adds water vapor to the air. You need one when your indoor air is too dry — typically when relative humidity drops below 30–35%.

When to use it: Mostly in winter. Cold outdoor air contains very little water vapor. When that air is brought inside and heated by your furnace, the relative humidity collapses — sometimes to 10–15%. Your furnace is essentially a dehumidifier that you never asked for.

The Special Case: You Need Both

Some homes need a humidifier in winter and a dehumidifier in summer — especially in four-season climates where outdoor conditions swing dramatically. The key is never running both simultaneously. Switch based on season and your hygrometer readings.

How do I know my dehumidifier is actually working? A working dehumidifier will fill its reservoir (or drain continuously) with collected water. If the unit runs continuously but the bucket stays empty and RH does not drop, the unit may need servicing (clogged filter, refrigerant issue, frozen coil).

Can I use my AC instead of buying a dehumidifier? Your AC does dehumidify while cooling, but only when running long cycles. If your outdoor temperatures are mild (spring, fall) the AC does not run long enough to pull significant moisture. In these transition seasons, a standalone dehumidifier is more effective than the AC for humidity control.

Does a humidifier increase energy costs significantly? Ultrasonic humidifiers use very little electricity — typically 30–50 watts. A furnace bypass humidifier uses essentially zero extra energy beyond the furnace fan.
